Pet Loss Awareness Day: Supporting Those Who Grieve
10th June 2025

At Petpals, we understand that pets are more than just animals — they are cherished members of the family. Their companionship brings joy, comfort, and unconditional love, which is why the loss of a pet can be such a deeply painful and personal experience.
Pet Loss Awareness Day, observed on the second Tuesday in June, is a moment to recognise the grief that comes with losing a beloved pet and to extend support to those who may be struggling in silence. Whether a pet passed recently or many years ago, their memory lives on — and so too does the love.
Grieving is Natural — and Personal
Everyone grieves in their own way and in their own time. Some may feel overwhelmed with sadness, others may experience guilt, or even relief if a pet had been unwell. There is no ‘right’ way to mourn, and no fixed timeline for healing.
As a community of pet lovers, it’s important to acknowledge that pet loss is real grief — and it deserves compassion, understanding, and space.
The Science Behind Pet Grief
Research has shown that the grief experienced after losing a pet can be as intense, or even more profound, than that felt after the loss of a human loved one. A study published in the Journal of Mental Health Counseling found that dog owners often placed their pets closer to themselves in their social networks than even family members, highlighting the deep bonds formed.
Further studies have indicated that the symptoms of grief — such as crying, loneliness, and depression — are similar regardless of whether the loss is of a pet or a human loved one. This underscores the importance of recognising and validating the mourning process for pet owners.

Helping Children Understand
For families with children, pet loss can be especially hard to explain. Honest, age-appropriate conversations can help little ones understand what has happened and process their feelings. Books and memory boxes can be helpful tools for children (and adults) to express love and remembrance. The BBC have published a useful guide of how to talk to your child when a family pet dies.
Remembering Together
Whether it’s lighting a candle, planting a flower or tree, creating a memory book, or simply sharing stories — finding a way to honour your pet’s life can be a meaningful part of the healing process.
Here for You
At Petpals, many of us have experienced the heartache of saying goodbye to a much-loved pet. We understand the depth of the bond — and the pain when that bond is broken. If you or someone you know is facing this journey, please know that support is available, and you are not alone.
Today and every day, we remember the pets who’ve touched our lives — and the people who carry their memory in their hearts.
