☀️ Sun Safety for Pets: Don’t Forget the Sunscreen! 🐾

With this glorious weather many of us are eager to get outdoors and enjoy the sunshine. But while we’re slathering on sunscreen and donning our hats, it’s easy to forget that our pets need sun protection too — especially those with light-coloured fur, pink noses or ears, or thin coats.

Just like humans, pets can suffer from sunburn, and over time, repeated exposure can increase the risk of skin cancer. Cats and dogs with white or pale fur are particularly at risk, especially around sensitive areas such as the nose, ears, and belly.

🌞 Top Tips for Keeping Your Pet Safe in the Sun:

  • Avoid peak sun hours (11am – 3pm)
Plan walks or garden playtime early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the strongest sun.

  • Provide plenty of shade
Whether you’re in the garden or out on a walk, make sure there’s a shady spot for your pet to cool off. A tree, umbrella, or a pop-up pet sun shelter are great options.

  • Use pet-safe suncream
Apply specially formulated pet sunscreen to vulnerable areas like noses, ear tips, and bellies. Never use human sunscreen, as it may contain harmful ingredients such as zinc oxide or salicylates.

  • Consider UV-protective clothing
Lightweight, breathable shirts made for pets can offer added protection without causing discomfort.

  • Limit indoor sun exposure too
Sun streaming through windows can still cause burns over time. Use blinds or UV-filtering window film to reduce exposure for indoor pets who love basking in the sunlight.

At Petpals, we always keep your pet’s comfort and wellbeing at the heart of what we do — rain or shine. Our experienced teams know how to spot signs of sun stress and are happy to share advice on keeping your furry friend safe during the summer months.
