Owner of Petpals Grantham, Wendy Turner, recently had her photo taken by local photographer Adrian Harvey, as part of his Grantham@Work project.

Adrian photographs local people, going about their daily working lives in Grantham, with some taken standing outside their shops, displaying their wares, in a style reminiscent of our Victorian fore fathers.

As dog walkers weren’t that popular in the Victorian era (1837 – 1900), even though dogs themselves were very much part of daily life, with fashionable ladies favouring lapdogs such as Maltese Terriers, Yorkshire Terriers, Pekinese and King Charles Spaniels, Wendy wasn’t able to recreate a recognised pose but instead choose a more modern day interpretation, with one of her guest dogs Brum, at the fields at Gonerby Hill Foot, near Grantham.

Although not an ancient trade, dog walkers and dog boarders are nonetheless an integral part of daily life for thousands of families up and down the country in 2016, allowing owners to go to work or on holiday, knowing their dogs are being walked and cared for in a home-from-home environment, with all the love and cuddles they would normally get from their families.

Wendy says,

‘I loved the fact that Adrian wanted to celebrate people who work in our local area and was delighted to take part. Before I set up Petpals Grantham I was a busy Tourism Coordinator for South Kesteven Council for over 12 years, managing staff and running Tourist Information Centres in Stamford and Grantham so, although my life now couldn’t be more different, I still feel very much part of the local working community. I thoroughly enjoy looking after people’s pets, walking their dogs, feeding their cats, mucking out their rabbits and guinea pigs, so they can go to work or go on a much needed holiday.  I like to think that although my role has changed I’m still helping to keep Grantham working; I’m now just a slightly smaller, but nonetheless utterly crucial cog, in the ever turning corporate wheel.’

‘I’ve long been fascinated by the Victorian and Edwardian photographs of shopkeepers and shops and find the static scene and facial expressions a wonderful glimpse into the working lives of ordinary folk in ordinary places. My aim with these photographs was to capture some of the same authenticity, here in 2016. The photographs are unscripted; time of day is determined by the business availability and the proprietor and staff are invited to pose as they choose, with or without the ‘tools of their trade’.  The lighting is real; I don’t add or take away light and the sun’s shadow (if it appears!) lies where it lies. The photographs are honest too; no retouching to remove street furniture or chewing gum on the pavement or peeling paint. It was great to meet Wendy and Brum and hear more about her life as a pet carer. If photography ever gets too much, I may just go and work with Wendy, looking after Grantham’s pets!’
