Hosepipe ban 2018 – looking after your pets

2nd August 2018

On the 5th August 2018 United Utilities will introduce a hosepipe ban that will apply to seven million households in the North West of England. Who knows if more will follow?

As a company focused on the happiness and well-being of pets, we thought we would look at how this ban affects you, a pet owner.

The good news is, having called them and visited their website, and particularly having read their ‘legal notice’ document, (read it in full here), your pets and their health and safety will remain largely unaffected.

Can I hose down my yard/patio if the dog/horse/cat/chickens wee or poo on it?

Yes. We asked them this exact question and were directed to this quote in their ‘legal notices’ document. Leaving an unwashed patio/paved/concrete area where covered in animal excrement could cause the ‘spread of causative agents of disease’ so you are totally within your rights to keep hosing them down and you do NOT need to write to them for a special license to do so.

My animal got dirty (ie a muddy dog walk), can I wash it down with a hose?

When we asked the operator this exact question he said yes, absolutely. United Utilities do not expect people’s animals to suffer because of the hose pipe ban and they understand the need for you to keep your animals clean. This kind of activity is absolutely fine, but of course use water sparingly.

Other questions already on their FAQ section:

Can I use a hosepipe for my animals?

Yes. Be obviously be careful with the amount you use but yes. Full answer on the website here.

Can I use a hosepipe to fill a trough for my animals?

Yes. Read the answer on the website here.

I’m not sure if I live in the hose-pipe ban area. Does it apply to me?
